Tips for Better Zoom Recording Quality
Transcription accuracy — whether from Zoom's built-in or a third-party tool — depends mostly on the audio going in. Five things that reliably improve results:
- 1.Ask everyone to use a headset mic. Laptop microphones pick up keyboard clicks, room echo, and distant voices. USB headsets or AirPods deliver 5-10% better accuracy on the same speaker.
- 2.Enable "Original sound for musicians" if the meeting has music, singing, or high-fidelity content. Zoom's default aggressive noise suppression can strip real content along with noise.
- 3.Record with a stable internet connection. Dropouts create gaps or garbled audio that no transcription tool can recover cleanly. Wired ethernet beats Wi-Fi for hosts.
- 4.One speaker at a time. Overlapping speech is the #1 killer of speaker diarization. Establish talking-stick etiquette for panel discussions or interviews.
- 5.Choose Cloud Recording over Local if you're on a paid plan and want the native transcript. Local recordings have no transcript path within Zoom.
Zoom gave me a VTT file — how do I convert it to plain text?
Zoom's cloud recording transcripts download as .vtt files (Web Video Text Tracks — the same format used for video captions). A VTT block looks like this:

Three ways to convert:
- • Manual (fastest for one file): Open the .vtt in any text editor, delete the header line, numeric index lines, and timestamp lines. Save as .txt.
- • Free online converter: Search "VTT to text converter" — several free tools accept the file and return plain text.
- • Upload directly: Most AI transcription tools (including VexaScribe) accept VTT as input — you get a cleaner transcript with real speaker labels instead of "Speaker 1" placeholders.
If you need speaker attribution beyond "Speaker 1"/"Speaker 2" or want a summary alongside the transcript, uploading the original MP4 recording to a dedicated AI tool produces a better output than post-processing the VTT.
